Repairs

Preventing the need for repair to your dentures begins with good care. There are many things you can do to keep your dentures in great shape and maintain their longevity.

  1. Handle your dentures carefully. Lay a towel on your counter or fill your sink with some water while you are inserting, removing or cleaning your denture. This will help to cushion a fall should they come out of your hands.
  2. Investing in a good denture cleaner is a must. Do not use bleach or other harsh chemical cleaners as they can corrode, fade or damage your dentures. Also, when using toothpaste, be sure to use a non-abrasive one, such as AIM gel.
  3. Brush and rinse your dentures daily. Use a clean, soft-bristled brush specifically designed for dentures and brush all surfaces of the denture, being careful not to bend attachments or damage the acrylic. Be sure to rinse your dentures well after every meal.
  4. Be sure that while you are not wearing your dentures, they are kept safely in a denture container with a solution of some water/cleaner, this will keep your denture from drying out and losing it’s shape. Family pets, specifically dogs, are notorious for taking dentures and using them as a chew toy. If you remove your dentures at home, be sure to keep them contained and out of reach of your pet.
  5. Denture repairs NEED to be made by your dental professional. Please do not try “do it yourself” repair kits or over the counter glues that may contain harmful chemicals that can damage the acrylic in your denture. Contact Dr. Fukuda immediately if your denture breaks, cracks, chips or one of the teeth become loose. Repairs can often be made in the same day, although some repairs require being sent to a local lab and will require more time, usually 24-36 hours.
